Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Smith Family Challenge?

Now in its 11th year, The Smith Family Challenge is an annual fundraising event. Started in 2008 by a former Smith Family Board Member, Paul Tobin, the event has raised nearly $4million to date. It is a multi-sport, 80 - 100km adventure race over two days, where teams of four raise $40,000 to support The Smith Family Learning for Life programs.

Who runs the Challenge?

The Challenge is supported by a committee of volunteers who guide the event management, recruit the participants, and drive the team fundraising targets. The event is designed and managed by ChallengeWorks.

When is the 2018 event?

The Challenge will take place from the evening of 1st March - Saturday 3rd March 2018.

What does the course involve?

The 2018 event will take place in the Jervis Bay area. Exact details remain a surprise until closer to the date! We can tell you it will involve navigation on foot, by bike and on water to the finish line. ChallengeWorks coordinates the course, safety, accommodation, food, equipment, support crew and is available to provide training and equipment advice.

Is there a maximum number of participants?

No, but in 2018 we hope to have 20 teams, a total of 80 participants.

How much does it cost?

Each participant will take fundraising to new heights and set out to raise $10,000 each (including a tax deductible $2,000 entry fee to cover costs). Teams of four must raise $40,000!

How fit do I need to be?

The Challenge is for your average middle aged man or woman, to go beyond their everyday physical limits, collaborate with a team, and make a positive contribution to the lives of disadvantaged children. You are only as fit as the team you are with! A lot of the course is built around learning something new, navigating well, and using teamwork to get you to the finish line.

I am interested in joining The Challenge, what do I do?

That's great! Please email Tim at The Smith Family:

How do I donate?

Just click ‘Donate' and follow the search prompts to donate to your favourite Challenger or Team. All donations over $2 are tax deductible in Australia.

Where does my money go?

All Challengers are paying the full cost of this trip so 100% of donations go directly to the cause. This year the fundraising target is $850,000. This will sponsor over 1,200 Australian children in need through The Smith Family's Learning for Life program. (It costs $576 to sponsor a student in the Learning for Life program for a full school year.)

What does The Smith Family do?

The Smith Family is a national children's charity that helps disadvantaged young Australians to succeed at school, so they can create better futures for themselves. With research showing that education has the power to transform lives, not just minds, the Learning for Life program enables disadvantaged children and young people to get the opportunities they need to fully participate in their education.
